Trent Reznor says HBO and BBC Worldwide Productions are moving forward with the development of “Year Zero,” the grim sci-fi epic that Reznor has chronicled in his music as well as in a celebrated Alternate Reality Game (ARG).
“We are in [the development phase of] pre-production with HBO and BBC [Worldwide Productions] to do a miniseries,” Reznor said.
Reznor is working with the team of Lawrence Bender, best known for producing Quentin Tarantino films such as “Pulp Fiction,” “Inglourious Basterds” and ”Reservoir Dogs“ as well as the documentaries “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Countdown to Zero,” and Kevin Kelly Brown, who was executive producer on “Roswell.“
“Year Zero” takes place approximately 15 years in the future, with the U.S. a religious dictatorship and the world on the brink of environmental and social collapse. Reznor has indicated that he’d be interested in a film version of the story, and has also hinted at a recorded sequel at some point.

Said TRENT REZNOR (NINE INCH NAILS, HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS) about his collaboration with ATTICUS ROSS (credited with programming and/or producing WITH TEETH, YEAR ZERO, GHOSTS I-IV and THE SLIP as well as the score for the movie THE BOOK OF ELI)
“This is what Atticus and I have been working on for the last few months. We had a great time working with David Fincher [SE7EN, THE GAME, FIGHT CLUB, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON] on this and the film turned out excellent – something we’re very proud of. It opens in theatres Oct 1 and you should check it out.
Musically, this all came out of our secret laboratory – electronic in basis, but mostly organic sounding. Lots of experiments and emphasis on sound fraying around the edges while focusing on the proper emotional tone for the various scenes.”
