CAPRICA Cancelled!!

October 27, 2010

'CAPRICA' poster

Caprica is toast. Syfy has announced that the low-rated Battlestar Galactica prequel has been canceled.

Said Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming at Syfy:

“Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”

This will not have any effect on the announcement a couple days back about the newly greenlit ‘BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: BLOOD & CHROME’. SyFy probably timed the cancellation as a good news/bad news thing for BSG fans and RONALD D. MOORE.

DUNE Remake Update: PETER BERG Is Out – Frontrunners To Direct Are NEIL MARSHALL And NEILL BLOMPKAMP

The latest:

Peter Berg completely dropped the project a few weeks ago — his Film 44 production company backed out, and now Paramount is scrambling to find a new director.

The search, however, has run into two issues: 1) they’re looking for a director who can put the movie together for under $175 million, which sounds manageable, but they don’t want anything resembling the crap effects of the ‘84 film, and 2) they want a director who already has a preexisting passion for the novel and is enthusiastic about the project. Right now, Paramount is shopping the script to two directors: They like Neill Blompkamp (District 9), who has the right vision, but the frontrunner, at the moment, is Neil Marshall (The Descent), who was sent the script early this month. However, despite the enthusiasm of producer, Kevin Misher (Public Enemies), the studio is somewhat tepid on Marshall, uncertain about handing over a $175 million film with franchise potential to a somewhat unknown director whose only hit was the modestly successful The Descent.

BRYAN SINGER: “Talking To FOX” About Directing New X-MEN Movie

October 12, 2009

BRYAN SINGER

BRYAN SINGER

Source: Associated Press

Bryan Singer said Sunday he’s interested in making another “X-Men” movie and has discussed the possibility with Twentieth Century Fox.

The American director made “X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United,” but passed on the third installment so he could make “Superman Returns.” “Rush Hour” director Brett Ratner ended up shooting that film, “X-Men: The Last Stand.” South African filmmaker Gavin Hood made another spin-off, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which was released earlier this year.

“I’m still looking to possibly returning to the ‘X-Men’ franchise. I’ve been talking to Fox about it,” Singer said at a talk at South Korea’s Pusan International Film Festival.

Read more HERE.

THRALL WORLD is cautiously optimistic about Singer returning to the X-MEN franchise. The mutant movies since he left have been absolute mutant shit.

But Singer’s movies since X-MEN have not been the gems he was hoping for. With SUPERMAN in development fubar (due to the Siegel heirs regaining copyright copntrol of the character in a few years) and Singer’s involvement with Battlestar Galactica somewhat of a risk considering how popular the SyFy series was and how the BSG movie will be yet another reiagining from scratch – X-Men seems like Singer’s logical best bet to regain solid footing.

Confirmed: BRYAN SINGER To Direct ‘BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’ Theatrical Movie, GLEN LARSON To Produce – No Relation To Recent SYFY Series

Universal Pictures has set Bryan Singer to direct and produce a feature version of “Battlestar Galactica.”

[Bryan Singer was to be invovled with the series reimagining before] Ronald D. Moore came on as executive producer and oversaw the 73-episode series relaunch, which had a critically acclaimed run on Syfy.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Moore would be invited to write the screenplay, but it is clear that Singer will put his own creative stamp on the project as the studio indicates that the film will be “[another] complete re-imagination.”

THRALL WORLD believes that it will be extremely difficult for anyone to do in two hours of film what R.D. Moore’s incredibly rich and textured BSG reimagining succeeded in doing in its 70+ episode television run.

Director PETER BERG Talks DUNE Remake

August 6, 2009

PETER BERG

PETER BERG

Source: SciFiWire.com

Peter Berg (HANCOCK, THE KINGDOM) on his upcoming DUNE adaptation currently in development:

“I think I had a much more different experience, I think, with the book than David Lynch did. To me, I think my interpretation will feel significantly different from that and the [Syfy] Channel miniseries that aired. I have a different experience than both of those filmmakers did.”

Berg sees the story more as an epic adventure.

“[The book] was much more muscular and adventurous, more violent and possibly even a little bit more fun. I think those are all elements of my experience of the book that can be brought in without offending the die-hard fans of the Bene Gesserit and Kwisatz Haderach. There’s a more dynamic film to be made.”
