“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago,” said Macdonald. “Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.”

There seemed to be some confusion on the part of the interwebz about whether or not red-haired EMMA STONE would play red-haired MARY JANE WATSON or blond-haired GWEN STACY.
Regardless of the hair, Stone has been slected to portray the role of GWEN STACY. And there seems to be a lot of importance attached to this casting so THRALL WORLD is led to believe that MJ might not figure as prominent in the SPIDER-MAN initial reboot movie as producers rewind and start anew the telling of the popular comic book hero.
EMMA STONE [ZOMBIELAND] has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures.
Stone has been tapped for the role of GWEN STACY opposite ANDREW GARFIELD [THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS] as Peter Parker.
The film, to be directed by Marc Webb [(500) DAYS OF SUMMER] from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.
Then again, we all saw the mediocre after-the-fact 3D conversion of the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake. Lucasfilm seems aware of the potential for a let down:
“Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right,” said John Knoll, Visual Effects Supervisor for Industrial Light & Magic. “It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.”
Thirlby will play Judge Cassandra Anderson, a psychically powered rookie Judge who teams with Judge Joe Dredd (Karl Urban) for training. Set in a dystopian future, the British comic book adaptation focuses on a police force given the power to act as judge, jury and executioner to whomsoever they perceive to be part of the criminal element.
In the 2000 A.D. comic book series (within which Judge Dredd is a recurring story), Anderson goes on to lead the city’s Psi Division, maintaining an uneasy friendship with Dredd.
Warner Bros. has bought Bruce C. McKenna (“The Pacific,” “Band of Brothers”) World War II pitch The Battle of Midway, reports Deadline.
The 3D film would be about the June 4-6, 1942, turning point of the war. The site adds that McKenna is expected to turn in a script in eight weeks for the film, which may carry a price tag of around $200 million.
Karl Urban [STAR TREK, LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, PATHFINDER] has been confirmed for the leading role in Judge Dredd by producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of the new film.
Andrew Macdonald’s DNA Films has made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to finance Judge Dredd, a 3D film that was scripted by Alex Garland, and will be directed by Pete Travis, best known for Vantage Point and Omagh.
[Alex] Garland [is] best known for writing the novel THE BEACH, and scripting the Danny Boyle-directed scifi film SUNSHINE and 28 DAYS LATER.

Not too big of a stretch considering the AVATAR 3D experience was so successful financially. No specifics on when as of yet.
“George [Lucas] has publicly expressed an interest in doing Star Wars 3D. Right now there are a number of different technologies, there’s some criticism out there about some of the movies that have quickly changed to 3D, so you have to pick the right technology, you have to get it to a cost that makes sense, and you have to have the time of the director and producer — George — to actually go in there, because you can’t push a button and stuff goes in one end and comes out 3D…
“Saying all that, George remains very interested in doing the Star Wars movies, all six, in 3D, and I hope it will happen someday in the not too distant future.”
Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton has found a new 3D project. He will direct a stop-motion animated film [a la THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and CORPSE BRIDE] based on Charles Addams’ original ghoulish cartoon drawings of The Addams Family.
Universal Pictures has announced the “The Twilight Saga” star Taylor Lautner will will play the title character in Stretch Armstrong, which will be made in 3D.
